The Woodland Caribou is one of the most endangered animals in the U.S. The only herd found south of the Canadian border resided in the Selkirk Mountains, on the northern Idaho-Washington border. The herd, so elusive that they were called “gray ghosts,” numbered about 40 individuals a decade ago but dwindled to three by 2018 - and just one by spring 2019. At that point, the last known individual in the Selkirk Mountains was captured and transported to a breeding facility in British Columbia, Canada. No known woodland caribou remain in the U.S.
